| Jack Berwick was Columbia Pictures Chief
Advertising Executive from the 50's until Columbia sold to Sony.
Jack was responsible for all phases of advertising and promotion
for RTWS including the printing of posters, photos as well as
distribution. His Son Mike was given a prop surfboard from the
Ride The Wild Surf movie. It was a huge gun that dwarfed the teenager.
Mike could hardly carry the monster down the beach. Jack had his
hand in many businesses including promoting concerts at the Burbank
Starlight Bowl which featured rock bands of the 80's. Jack authenticated
all RTWS items featured here. |

Historical look at Surf Movie Posters
Below is a list of movies deemed to be the most
historically significant as to the impact they had on the sport
/ lifestyle of surfing. Hence the value of the posters advertising
these movies.
All the great old surf films by don brown, bruce
brown, greg noll, john severson and all the rest introduced
early surfers to other surf locations, wave riding styles, big
waves with a little local culture and humor thrown in.
The films below changed surfing forever.
1. Gidget
Gidget, the fifties romp about Kathy Korner's life at malibu
point waked the slumbering masses from their good golly miss
molly be-bop haze driving them to the sea in search of youthful
nirvana. Playing coast to coast and world wide, now folks in
Indiana and elsewhere thought they knew what surfing was all
about.
2. Ride The Wild Surf
Ride The Wild Surf, Mid sixties Hollywood version of The Endless
Summer, life or death Waimea Bay, surfers battling to be king
of the mountain. Throw in Jan and
Dean's catchy jingle babes in bikini's and on comes the second
wave. Real surfing by legends in big surf gave this film an
air of authenticity. Seeing Greg Noll charge Waimea on the big
screen was like seeing God. Mickey Dora even picked off a few.
3. BEACH PARTY
The Beach Party Movies were huge. Patterned after the winning
Gidget formula. Kids graduated with Annette from the Mickey
Mouse Club to the shores of Malibu. These films hammered the
point home proving that even bun hugging chain wearing dark
haired lotharios went to the beach in search of surf and babes.
Today re runs are waking kids up from their jason play acting
sponge bob comas to search for Muscle Beach or at least Kelly's
Surf Pro on Playstation. The best thing about these films was
catching glimpses of Johnny Fain, Mickey Dora and the rest of
the stand ins ride waves no matter how lame the story line was.
And Mickey Munoz doubling for Gidget wearing a bra and womens
wig? Classic!
Love or hate em Gidget, Ride The wild Surf and
The Beach Party series were the most influential films in surfing
changing it forever.
The Endless Summer
Ironically at about the same time RTWS was released The Endless
Summer quietly was making it's way up one coast and down the
other. No huge budget, created with a simple storyline, two
guys traveling chasing the warm summer around the world. Bruce
brown gave the world a real look at what fun it is to be a surfer.
Appealing to surfers and non surfers this film is still the
best film ever made about surfing.
The Endless Summer shot in 16mm featured originally
at local high school auditoriums and theatres bruce brown personally
narrated the film before it was released in 35 mm and hit the
big screens. These shows were promoted personally by bruce with
8.5" x 11" handbills and larger 11" x 17"
window posters. Van Hammerfeld created artwork. The classic silhouette
of Bruce, Mike and Robert against the magenta sun and red beach
is now the most recognizable image linked to surfing... ever.
